Hardly seeded - the first beans are already ready for harvest. Most bean varieties take about 8 to 10 weeks to harvest. There are early varieties such as the bush bean "Saxa" - whose first tender beans are ready for harvest after just six weeks.

Beans are carefully picked by hand. The young fruits are harvested before the germs push through the husk. Every two to three days can be picked.

Frequent picking promotes the formation of new shoots and increases yields. If you want to use the beans as dry beans, you let them mature.

Due to their short growth period, beans can be sown until the end of July. So you can grow them twice in a row at the same place or use an early harvested bed, such as new potatoes, in the same year again.


To win seeds

If you want to gain seeds from your harvest, you can let some beans mature. If you get a white tint, remove the beans and put them in a warm, dry place. From the dry husks, you release the kernels, which are laid side by side to dry.

Store beans

The fresh, tender beans taste best. They must not be eaten raw. Raw beans are poisonous. Cooked, the legumes can be safely consumed.

But usually not all beans can be used at once. By cooking, freezing and drying their shelf life can be extended. Taste and vitamins are best preserved by freezing. The beans are briefly blanched before freezing.

What happens to the plant?

If the plant has been spared from diseases and pests, the herb of the plant comes to the compost. The roots can remain in the soil until digging in the fall and continue to enrich it with nitrogen.
