By knocking a self-constructed balcony box with foil, you protect the material used from moisture. This applies primarily to natural materials such as spruce, larch, Douglas fir and other types of wood. If vessel walls and the soil are exposed to permanent moisture, rot and mold develop. This not only suffers the balcony box. The pathogens are not spared from the pathogens either.
However, if it is a planter made of water-resistant material, you can do without the use of foil. This applies, for example, if you have intended a second life as a balcony box for a disused gutter.

Tips
If you fill your self-made flower box with substrate, a drainage to protect against waterlogging must not be missing. This premise applies regardless of whether you use slide or not. Lay on the bottom of the box a 3 to 5 cm high layer of expanded clay, pebbles, potsherds or a similar inorganic material.
