The usually narrow strip in front of a hedge can be beautifully planted with onion and summer flowers, shrubs and shrubs. Special site conditions
Planting flowers in front of a hedge can be problematic: the location may be shady because a high hedge swallows the light. But it can also be that the flowerbed lies directly in the sun - and then can heat up strongly due to the wind-protected location. Furthermore, the type of hedge can cause problems, such as when it is a very flat-rooted hedge plant. Here, the root pressure is particularly high, which is why you must plan the planting accordingly - deeply rooted shrubs and perennials, set between the main roots, are perfect here. Also note that hedge and flowerbed can quickly compete with nutrients and water - regular watering and fertilising is mandatory.
Suitable plants for the hedge bed
Basically, the smaller the bed, the fewer flowers you should select, otherwise it will quickly become cluttered and chaotic. Three to five plants, always set alternately, are perfectly adequate for most hedge beds. The changing planting of a flowerbed with tall, bushy plants and small shrubs has a nice effect. In a multi-row planting, the rule is that higher plants belong to the background, while lower ones belong to the front.
Sunny location
Roses are perfect for a sunny, hot spot, best in combination with lavender. This not only looks pretty, but also keeps the aphids away. But Mediterranean herbs (which often bloom great) as well as steppe candles, Euphorbia, wool-Ziest or peonies are perfect here.
Partly shady and shady location
On the other hand, if the hedge takes away too much light, shade-tolerant plants must be planted here. For example, hydrangeas, cranesbills, funchios, astilbe trees, purple bells, forest goat's beard or silver candle are wonderful.
Tips
If you prepare the flowerbed in front of the hedge for planting, damage as few roots of the hedge plants as possible. A digging is often not possible, but instead loosen the ground carefully with a digger fork. Then bring plenty of mature compost and horn shavings to ensure adequate supply of nutrients.
