Flowerbeds can be creatively designed not only by using different perennials and other plants, also inanimate decoration elements create an individual image. Stones are particularly popular here, especially as stone and pebble beds are considered to be particularly easy to care for.
Why create a stone bed?
Stone and pebble beds are by no means mere stone deserts, which are broken by a few plants. Instead, you can use the stones like mulch so that stubborn weeds do not stand a chance and you work less with your flowerbed. In addition, flowered bedding always looks clear and tidy - an important design feature in both modern gardens and Japanese gardens, where gravel often replaces water. Of course, the planted perennials receive enough space and air to feel comfortable in the bed. How many plants you place in them, it is up to your taste and your ideas.
Different types of stone beds
The choice of stones or types of stone determines the appearance of the stone bed. It is practically infinite. Different types of stone and colors, grains and gravel, boulders and gravel create very individual design options. Here you can create the bed very modern - for example, with different colored, arranged in geometric shapes pebbles and dotted planting of perennials - or as a wild natural garden with a mulch cover of natural stone, the one or other foundling in between and possibly a natural stone wall.
Which plants feel comfortable in the stone bed?
Not all plants are made for life in a stone bed. Drought-tolerant perennials in particular feel well here, as the substrate dries dry through the stone ceiling. Mediterranean flowering plants and herbs, but also many mountain plants are just right for this application.
How to create a stone bed
When creating the stone bed, however, it is not enough just to spread gravel or gravel between the perennials. Instead, you should create the flowerbed from scratch, where under the stone layer first a weed fleece is laid. This is followed by a layer of topsoil in which the selected plants are placed. Any boulders and other decorative elements should now be placed before the stones are deployed as a last step.
Tips
Instead of putting on a real stone bed, you can also simply integrate one or more beautiful boulders into the flower bed.
