The choice of plants depends primarily less on personal preferences than on the local conditions. Most flowering plants prefer a sunny spot where full sun shines for at least six hours a day. For partial shade - four to six hours of sun a day - and shady garden areas, the choice is limited. However, even in such a location you do not need to give up flowers. In addition to the light intensity, the soil quality also plays a major role, because depending on the species, plants prefer a dry or rather wet, a nutrient-poor or humus-rich, a sandy or loamy soil. However, less suitable for all garden plants are highly compacted, even wet soils. These need a drainage and an improvement, such as a loosening with sand and / or mature compost.
Bed size and shape
The size of the flowerbed also depends on the local conditions - a narrow strip in front of a hedge or a wall certainly does not offer the same possibilities as a free-form, round bed in the middle of a large garden area. However, make sure that you easily reach the middle of the bed for care work. For this reason, the plant should not extend more than 70 centimeters to the middle of the bed, ergo be a maximum of 140 centimeters wide. The length, however, is completely up to you. Incidentally, flowerbeds do not necessarily have to be rectangular, and at some locations, such as shaped cake pieces, semicircular, round, triangular, curved or other shapes are shown to their best advantage.
