Hydroponic plants do not dry up fast
Are you planning a vacation? 4 tips for a successful watering of potted plants
A long vacation, and sometimes even a short weekend break can pose problems for the proud owner of sumptuous houseplants or a balcony garden. After all, there are not always helpful (or knowledgeable) neighbors or friends who are happy to take over the correct watering of the plants. However, you can remedy this by building simple irrigation systems yourself.
1. Hydroculture / Granules
If you drive away frequently or are not home for several days at a time, you should cultivate your plants in a hydroponic culture right from the start. This not only simplifies the daily watering, but also provides the houseplants with adequate care during an absence. However, not all species are suitable for such a culture. But you can also apply the principle in a simplified way for your vacation: Fill a large tub or balcony box with a layer of granules about five centimeters thick. On top of that put the plant pots, which should have a hole at the bottom. Fill the large container with more granules until the pots are about halfway into it. Now water the granules (not the earth!).
2nd bathtub
Even easier is the principle described with old towels and a bathtub. Thats how it works:
3. PET bottle
If you are going on a summer holiday for a longer period of time, you can put several PET or glass bottles filled with water in the previously moistened potting soil. This method is particularly suitable for balcony plants in large boxes or tubs.
4. wool thread
Smaller potted plants or houseplants, on the other hand, can be watered with the help of a wool or cotton thread (the latter usually works better!). Insert one end of the thread into the potting soil as well as into a container filled with water.
Tips
Flowers survive a longer dry spell better if you cut off the flowers before you leave. While this does not look so pretty, it does significantly reduce water consumption - and moreover, the plants tend to replant new blooms quickly. You can then enjoy them after your return.
