Build a trellis for berries yourself
Harvesting delicious berries fresh from your own garden is a pleasure for children and adults alike, which greatly increases the enjoyment of your own garden during the summer months. If raspberries and blackberries are cultivated, it is essential to think of a suitable trellis aid for the plants.
A climbing aid prevents various problems
Raspberries and blackberries are prone to a rather creeping growth without proper care, as soon as individual shoots reach a certain length. On the other hand, if the plants are clearly guided along the wires or rods of a climbing aid, this has the following advantages:
A trellis can be made of different materials
There are many different types of trellis aids, but raspberry and blackberry trellis tend to consist of a type of buttress and wires or bars stretched or hung therebetween. Sometimes just three rows of wires are stretched between metal bars that are pushed sufficiently deep into the ground. But more stability is provided by square chisels with driving collars, at the sides of which, with the aid of a spacer, the three wire rows placed one above the other are doubled at some distance. Thus, the raspberry or blackberry shoots can be easily trained in the middle between the two wire rows in an upright growth direction. With a bit of creativity, berry climbing aids can also be produced from a variety of materials such as wooden slats, old iron bars of fence systems or particularly stable bamboo sticks.
Tips
If the shoots of raspberries or blackberries are fixed to a climbing aid with binding wire or other materials at certain times, these can later be distinguished from freshly regrown shoots. This can be an important information gain for the pruning of the varieties cultivating the two-year shoots.
