Is the tree worm hardy?
The tree worm (bot., Celastrus) is botanically not a single plant, rather, it is a genus of the family of the spindle plants. The approximately 30 different species are native to Asia, America and Australia.
According to the large distribution area, the differences are sometimes considerable, some species are evergreen, others throw off their leaves in the fall. The climatic conditions are not the same. You will find tree worms in temperate climates, but also in the tropics. The location varies from dry thickets to humid forests. However, tree shrikes are considered very hardy.
How do I care for my tree shrike in winter?
Unlike many other hardy plants, the tree worm does not need any winter protection, because it can handle temperatures down to - 28 ° C. If its leaves have fallen off, then it hardly needs water and no fertilizer.
A pruning in autumn is not necessary. Let the climbing bush grow until its size meets your expectations. Then you can trim it at will at any time at will.
Can I use the glowing berries somehow?
The decorative berries of the tree-worm are slightly poisonous, like all other parts of the plant too. So you should not be on your diet. Birds, however, serve the berries as winter food. If you want to use twigs with the bright orange to red fruits for a colorful fall bouquet, make sure that no small children have access to the bouquet.
But in order to be able to spot berries on their tree shrike, they absolutely need at least one male and one female plant. Depending on the species, the fruit then ripen from July or August and decorate the otherwise bald climbing vine until well into winter.
