Farmer's hydrangea has faded - cut off blooms?
"No flower dies more beautiful" wrote the famous perennial shrubber and garden philosopher Karl Foerster about the farmer's hydrangea. In fact, the deceased inflorescences of the farmer hydrangea are very decorative in their slightly morbid beauty. In the spring, however, they should still be cut away.
Do not cut inflorescences too deep
Farm hydrangeas form their flower buds for the following year already in the late summer of the previous, so that these buds overwinter at the shoots. For this reason, if possible, farmer hydrangeas should not be cut back too much, except for a clearing and rejuvenation cut after a few years. The faded inflorescences can be cut either in autumn or spring, but you must not cut too deeply. Look closely at where the fresh shoots are coming from and where the new flower buds are - cut the old flower stems just above it.

Dry fresh flowers
For this drying you cut the flowers already best, as long as they still have their strong color.
Drying by dehydration
Fill a vase with just under a hand's width of water and place the cut hydrangeas there. Do not refill the water. It is gradually depleted and the flowers begin to dry. They feel parchment-like and look a bit crumpled. However, they bleach quite strong in this type of drying.
Drying with cat litter
An insider tip is the drying of the hydrangea flowers in very fine cat litter, which extracts water from the flowers and at the same time ensures that the beautiful color is retained. Fill cat litter and hydrangea flowers in an airtight container so that the flowers are completely covered. The flower is ready preserved within about four days.
Dry slightly faded flowers
In this method, the flowers should have already started to dry on the plant. Once they feel paper like, they are cut. Only the stems and the flower balls remain, the foliage is removed. Hang the flower stems individually over head in an airy and shady place to dry.
