A garden is especially lush green and homely when it is planted on several levels. In particular, when many larger trees are on the property, their often bare tree slices look less impressive. With a few tricks, however, this difficult region can also be planted.
Easy to underplant: deep and heart root
Trees such as oak, pine, apple and rowan are easy to underplant, as they form only a few main roots, most of which grow in depth. Thus, their tree disk is mostly free of roots that compete with underplanted perennials and flowers for water and nutrients. Therefore, you should have no problems with deep-root and heart-rooting, here appropriate perennials, ornamental grasses, summer flowers, ferns or even low trees to plant. There is one limitation, however: the species selected for planting must be shaded and the existing soil conditions (humid / dry, nutrient-poor / nutrient-rich) should be taken into account.
Difficult flatroots
On the other hand, the planting of shallow roots such as maple, spruce or birch is considerably more difficult as their roots grow thicker through the tree-pulp and thus dig up the water from other plants. Still other species such as beech and horse chestnut grow very dense, so that hardly falls on the tree disc light. Here, the planting is difficult, if not impossible, due to the unfavorable lighting conditions. Still other trees, such as walnut, have developed a different strategy to get rid of unwelcome competitors: their autumn deciduous foliage contains essential oils that prevent the growth of other plants.
Planting trees - this is how it works
However, with a few tricks you can even plant at least a few bulbous plants under some flatroot. Spring flowers such as snowdrops, snowflakes, crocuses or tulips are seldom confused by the strong root pressure, and their onions can easily fit between the roots. If the soil is heavily rooted, a thick layer of mother earth, which is applied to the tree disc, helps. Leave at least 20 centimeters around the trunk so that the tree is not constricted. The autumn leaves of many trees such as walnut and Co. should always be cleared away for successful planting, otherwise the plants will soon come to you. After planting, mulch the entire tree disc thickly with bark mulch to keep the valuable moisture in the soil.
Tips
The best time for a planting is the late summer from the end of July, since most trees have completed their growth at this time and the need for water and nutrients is now not so great.
