The berries of the Arum are poisonous

Help, in my garden arum proliferates!

Plants that grow large parts of the garden are not popular and welcome everywhere. But to be able to combat them successfully, it should be known which plant it actually is. That's the same with the Arum.

It is not always the "right" arum (bot Arum maculatum). Often, the unwanted plant is quite another, such as a lizardwort (bot. Sauromatum Venosum), also known as Voodoo Lily. It belongs to the family of the arum family, but is only remotely related.

Does the Arum really have to go?

In a family garden, the Arum has nothing to look for with its bright red berries. Too attractive for small children. Dangerous is above all the fact that these berries do not taste unpleasant but rather sweetish. Already on suspicion that your children have eaten it, you should see a doctor immediately.

With a size of about 15 to 40 cm, the arum is not particularly large. He likes to grow in semi-shade and under trees. The berries are red, where hardly any color is found. If there is no danger to small children or pets, then you can quietly grow this protected plant in a quiet corner of your garden.

How do I fight the Arum?

If you really want to remove the Arum from your garden, either "starve" it or they will tear out all plants. Remove water from the arum and expose it to plenty of light, then it will retreat there.

If you have decided to tear out the Arum, you will probably succeed very quickly. To avoid a rash, it is important to wear gardening gloves before starting work. The juice of the arum has a corrosive effect. Only with the drying of the plant the effect diminishes slowly.

Tips

If no one is endangered by the arum in your garden, then you do not necessarily have to fight this plant, after all, it is under protection and is therefore quite rare.
