Repot the agave properly
Many species of agave are not hardy in the open air in this country and are therefore usually cultivated as potted plants on the balcony or on the terrace. If the agaves grow larger over time, they should also be regularly transplanted into a new or larger pot.

Basically, while other times are possible for the repotting of agaves, but it offers a pot change directly after Auswintern in the spring. While in other plant species the pruning of roots or leaves stimulates plant growth, agave should be avoided. Since agaves can be quite significant in wet, sore areas, yellow leaves on the base should not be cut off until completely dry. Even without pruning the agaves should get a slightly larger planter about every two to three years by repotting.
The suitable substrate for the agave pot
For succulent plants such as agaves, special substrate mixtures for cacti are commercially available. These are relatively nutrient poor and reduce the risk of waterlogging in the root area of the plants. After you have provided the base of the prepared planter with water drainage holes and a drainage layer of coarse gravel or potsherds, but you can also fill your own soil mixture of two-thirds of ordinary potting soil and a third of the following ingredients in the pot:
These substrate components ensure less water storage in the soil and thus prevent the dangerous waterlogging in the root area of the agaves.
When repotting, think immediately of the multiplication
If you already disrupt the natural growth of agaves with care measures such as repotting, you can immediately think of the propagation of plants. Carefully separate the offshoots named Kindel from the mother plant with a sharp knife and place them in dry planting material. The offspring, like the mother plant, may only be re-cast about two to three weeks after repotting.
Tips
Even if you do not bother the spikes on the tips of the agaves during the year, repotting them can be all the more a real risk of injury. You can put on the spikes before repotting wine corks or similar materials and deduct them if necessary after the successful repotting.
