Are cypresses hardy and are they overwintered?
Whether or not cypresses are really hardy is something opinions differ from experts. Some say that cypresses are absolutely hardy and thrive in every location, while others recommend setting the decorative coniferous trees outdoors only in sheltered locations.

Shorter periods of frost tolerate cypress trees in the garden. It can be up to minus 15 degrees for a few days, but as soon as the temperatures fall below freezing for a long time, there is a risk of the tree coming in.
An even bigger problem than the frost is the water supply in winter. Most damage such as yellow and brown needles or dried branches are caused by lack of water.
Winterize cypress in the field
Winters are cypresses in sheltered locations, where temperatures rarely drop below minus ten degrees. If the site is still sheltered from the wind, you do not need to worry about whether the conifers survive the winter well.
Things are different in places that are unprotected and located in areas where it is often very cold in winter. Here you should absolutely ensure that the cypresses are protected from frost.
Protect cypresses from frost
Lay out a mulch cover under the trees or the hedge. It prevents the soil from drying out too much. The cypress trees protect you by yourself

Even when it gets very cold, the cypresses are less likely to suffer from the cold than from the dry soil. That is why it is important that you regularly water cypress trees as a single tree or as a hedge in winter.
Use frost-free days to provide the plants with slightly warmed up water. This is especially true for potted plants that dry out even faster in winter.
Tips
If you bring back from the holiday a cypress from the Mediterranean as a souvenir, you should put this in no case directly in the field. The tree would not survive a longer, frosty winter. It's better to plant such cypress trees in a bucket.
