Bark beetles inflict such damage on the cypress that they are usually beyond saving

These pests occur in cypresses

In addition to some diseases, especially fungal diseases, some pests can make the cypresses. You do a lot of damage to a cypress if you do not do something about it in time. How to detect a pest infestation and what to do about it.

Which pests can occur in cypresses?

A healthy plant can cope with a pest infestation quite well. Therefore, take care of the correct care of the cypress.

Fight miner moths

Of the more than 100 species of miniature moth, there are a few that specialize in cypresses. The infestation is triggered by the larvae of the moth and is shown by dry shoot tips. In case of heavy infestation also feeding passages in the shoots themselves are recognizable.

Cut off all affected shoots. Dispose of them with household waste. Since the nocturnal larvae are barely visible to the naked eye, you should then spray the cypress with commercially available insecticides.

Recognize bark beetle

If there are brown, dry spots on the shoot tips, cut off one of the branches and see if there are any pinholes in them. In this case, the cypress was attacked by bark beetles.

In a bark beetle infestation, the cypress is beyond saving. Dig them out and discard them. Do not leave any plant remains in the garden unnecessarily long. This will prevent the pests from spreading further.

What to do against lice on cypress trees?

Mealybugs can be recognized by the sticky deposit that appears on the needles and shoot tips. The lice are so big that you can see them if you look closely.

For small trees, it is worth trying to wash the lice with soapy water. Spraying with a hard jet of water is not recommended as the cypress shoots break too easily.

In case of heavy infestation only the use of a spray against lubrication lice helps.

Tips

If the needles inside the cypress turn brown and show no further signs of disease or pest infestation, this is a normal process. The shoots get too little light, dry up and then fall off. Sometimes it helps to light up the tree a bit.
