Wild wine - beware of wasps
The virgin scion, often referred to as wild wine, is one of the grapevine (Vitis) not dissimilar plant, which is not cultivated for the production of grapes, but primarily as an ornamental plant. Wild wine is very vigorous and will soon overgrow whole walls, house walls and pergolas. In autumn, the plant produces small, round berries, which are poisonous to humans, but are coveted food for birds and wasps.
Wasps are especially attractive to fruits
When the virgin broom shows its inconspicuous flowers in June and July, the time of the bees begins. The industrious nectar collectors like to feed wild wine frequently, but in many cases are harmless. The same is true of many other insects, which also enjoy the flower nectar and the fruits of the plant, such as hoverflies. On the other hand, it looks quite different with wasps, which are also starting to increase the number of wild wines around the end of August / beginning of September. The Stechinsekten have it less on the flowers, but rather the fruiting approaches and fruits.Since wasps can become very aggressive just at the end of summer, Wilder wine should not be planted in the vicinity of frequently frequented garden areas such as the terrace.
Wild wine is teeming with life
In fact, the dense foliage of the Wild Wine is teeming with life: Not only does the wasp nibble on the fruit of the maiden's vine, they also prefer to build their nests in dense foliage - as do many species of birds, as well as mice and others small rodents. Incidentally, the latter like to use the tendrils to reach higher storeys and therefore also the houses, for example through open windows or over the roof. If you plan to cut back, you should take into account the bird's breeding season, if possible, so as not to disturb them during their rearing.
Measures against wasps
In general, wasps - like all other wild animals - are protected by the Federal Nature Conservation Act and must not be killed for no reason. Thus, the setting up of so-called wasp traps or the foaming of wasp nests is prohibited. In the case of a strong threat, however, it is possible to have the animals removed and resettled by a specialized exterminator. Also, some local fire departments have a specially trained wasp expert who can help you with your problem.
Tips
Many gardeners swear on wasp traps in which the unloved animals drown. Unfortunately, these traps are not only deadly for wasps, but also for other insects such as bees.
