To extend the harvest time
In the German wine-growing regions there is busy activity from the end of August, because the time of the harvest has begun. The harvest season extends well into October. For the respective grape variety, the time window of the harvest is only open for 2-3 weeks. Clever hobby gardeners therefore plant 3 different grape varieties in the garden and on the balcony: for early, mid-early and late harvest.
Recognize ripe grapes and harvest properly
The successful cultivation of grapevines is a challenge for every hobby gardener. To make sure that the busy time leads to the enjoyment of sun-drenched fruits, the harvesting time must be carefully chosen. These are the characteristics of ripe grapes:
If the full maturity could be ascertained beyond doubt, the harvest is quite easy from the hand. Use a pair of scissors to cut off the entire grape. If there are damaged or rotten berries underneath, they will be plucked out in the next step.
Do not wash grapes after harvest unless they are eaten immediately. The fruit stalks should linger until consumed by the berries. In this way, the fruits stay fresh longer. Stored in the fruit basket at room temperature, you can snack on it for up to 5 days. If you want a longer shelf life, store the grapes after harvesting:
Tips & Tricks
Grapes are among the non-climacteric fruits. That means they will not ripen. If in doubt, leave the grapes for a few days on the vine to get more sun.
