Do not sow thyme directly
Thyme is a very vigorous herb that can be easily grown on seeds or cuttings.
Thyme is a light germ
The seeds of thyme are extremely fine - just one gram of thyme seed contains about 4,000 granules. Such fine seeds should preferably not be applied directly to the bed, but preferred in small pots or culture dishes. This is also advisable insofar as the grains germinate only from about 15 ° C - a temperature that is rarely reached between March and May in many areas of Germany. Furthermore, thyme is a typical light germ, d. H. the seed must not be covered with soil or only extremely thinly.

Pique and plant young plants
The thyme seeds will germinate quite quickly within a maximum of two weeks. After four to five weeks, the young plants can be piqued. To do this, plant several plantlets (maximum three to four) in a larger pot. After another four weeks, the larger plants are allowed to be in the bed - provided that no night frosts are to be expected. Ergo, it can take place in the garden from about mid to late May, if you have already moved in March. Plant the young thyme at a distance of 25 x 25 centimeters.
Tips & Tricks
When planting the thyme, make sure that the top of the bale is approximately at the same height as the top of the bed - especially deeply planted thyme can enter. Incidentally, this planting note also applies to purchased thyme plants.
