Planting succulents in the garden - how are you?
In the garden, succulents do not sting with their extravagant charms. Some magnificent species have sufficient winter hardiness, causing a sensation in the bed. The exotic origin and special preference for Spartan framework conditions should be taken into account when planting. Which location is suitable?
Succulent plants come from regions of the world where sunshine abounds and rain is scarce. In the garden, therefore, choose a location that is equal to these conditions. A full sunny, warm location is ideal. This may also like to be a protected wall niche with southern exposure, which also keeps much of the rain away from the succulents.
Which soil texture is beneficial for succulents?
Succulents are not adjusted to the rainy climate of our regions. The soil in the sunny location should therefore be well drained to a depth of about 30 cm, so that excess water drains quickly. The concentrated nutrient charge of normal garden soil also does not appeal to the exotic survival artists. By enriching the soil with quartz sand or fine grit before planting, you optimize the permeability and at the same time lean the soil succulently.
When is the best planting time?
In terms of the best planting time, succulents with other perennials of the garden pull together. If no more ground frost is expected from the beginning / middle of May, the time window for planting opens. At high altitudes, we recommend waiting until early June until the risk of sheep's cold is over.
How is the process of planting in detail?
A key function is the proper preparation of the soil. Rake the bed thoroughly until the soil is fine crumbly. Weeds, old roots and larger stones are removed. If there are doubts about the permeability, dig the soil deep into the soil and mix the excavation one-third with quartz sand or grit. In these steps, proceed as follows:
Press the substrate with the (gloved) hands to ensure a good bottom closure without air holes. Finally, cover the soil with a thin layer of grit, pebbles or sand. The inorganic material prevents the formation of putrefaction by direct contact of the succulent shoots, leaves or rosettes with the substrate.
Tips
When choosing a location, plan the delicate wintering of your succulents in the garden right away. Without adequate wetness protection, even your most winterhardy trinkets will be lost. Ideally, plant hardy succulents in the rain shadow of a wall or leave enough space for a translucent superstructure to protect against snow and rain.
