The butterfly lilac can grow to several meters
Annual growth of the summer lilac - How big is the shrub?
In many German gardens he is to be found - the strong flourishing butterfly magnet called summer lilac. The bush, which is not related to the common lilac (Syringa), is also just the right choice if you need a growth that is as fast as possible - for example, for a hedge or to enhance an ugly gap.
Summer lilac is very fast growing
There are two different species of summer or butterfly lilac that grow at different rates. The actual butterfly shrub, Buddleja davidii, grows between 30 and 200 centimeters a year depending on growing conditions, location and weather conditions. Depending on the variety Davidii can be up to 350 inches high and almost as wide. The Buddleja alternifolia, called Hanging-lilacs because of its overhanging shoots, is also strong, but not as abundant as B. davidii. B. alternifolia grows between 30 and 50 centimeters per year and can grow up to 300 centimeters high.
Tips
While Buddleja davidii needs to be cut back every spring, you should only give B. alternifolia a slightly better finish in the fall.
