    First wash the amount of sesame you want to roast. Drain the grains well on a kitchen towel or in a fine sieve. Prepare a bowl for the roasted sesame now. Heat a pan on medium. Once the pan has reached the temperature, add the still wet sesame. Do not use oil. Roast the grains while stirring until they turn brown. It takes about two to three minutes and the sesame starts to pop, the grains jump in the pan. Once a grain is easy to grind between the fingers to flour, the sesame is ready. Immediately remove the grains from the heat and pour them into the bowl. Do not leave the sesame in the pan, its residual heat could burn the sensitive grains. Allow the sesame to cool completely.

Roasted sesame is stored in a dry and dark place. For storage is an airtight packaging, such as a glass with screw cap. Properly stored, the roasted sesame holds a few months.

Roast sesame in the oven

As an alternative to the roasting process on the stove, the sesame can also be baked in the oven.


    Preheat the oven to 175 degrees. Lay out a baking tray with baking paper. Put the sesame on the plate. The grains should not be too thick over each other as this will lengthen the roasting process. Shake the plate every few minutes to prevent the grains from burning. The seeds should be browned after about ten minutes. Add the seeds to a cold tin or tray to cool.
