Mustard is a very undemanding crop and thrives not only in the garden bed but also in the pot on the windowsill or on the balcony. What should be considered when sowing, you will learn in the following.

Generally, a distinction is made between brown, black and white (yellow) seeds. The three differ not only in taste but also in their stature height. Black mustard is the tallest with a stature height of up to 1.80m and is therefore particularly suitable for cultivation in the garden. White mustard, however, is only 30 to 70cm high and can therefore be grown well on the balcony.
Where can mustard be sown?
Mustard thrives, as already mentioned, not only in the garden bed. Simply sow your mustard in a pot on the balcony or even in a bowl by the window. The important thing is that he gets some light, so that it can grow properly and that you keep the substrate moist.
When is mustard sown?
Mustard can in principle be sown all year round. However, young mustard, like all young plants, is sensitive to frost and should therefore only be planted outdoors after the ice saint. If you want to harvest the seeds, a sowing in May is advisable. For example, the mustard produces flowers in summer and in autumn you can harvest the mustard seeds.
So you sow your mustard
You can either sow your mustard directly in the field in May, or you can pull it out on the windowsill and plant it outside after the icy saints. This is how to proceed with sowing:
If you have many birds in your garden or on your balcony, it is advisable to protect the seeds with a net or a scarecrow. To be on the safe side, you can sow the seeds more densely and pique them as soon as the plantlets have two pairs of leaves.
What happens after sowing?
Mustard needs little care. But make sure that the substrate does not dry out, especially after sowing. Mustard germinates relatively quickly, so that young mustard plants can be seen after just a few days.
