Instructions for a great sandbox for the little ones
For children, the sandbox in their own garden is still the greatest. For hours they work on the baking of sand cake, imitate the construction site opposite the game, dig deep holes and build sand castles. You can easily build a wooden sandbox yourself with our blueprint and detailed instructions. Our self-made model is so uncomplicated that even inexperienced DIY enthusiasts succeed without any problems.
Form
In most public playgrounds the sandpit is square or rectangular and has a wide wooden seat. This variant is not only easy to create, even built it is also much cheaper than a ready-made model. Each inner and outer wooden square, which is stabilized by the seat, form the backbone.

First, use a batter board to mark the inner surface that you need to lift out for the self-made sandpit. Make sure that the edges of the created pit are straight and at exactly the right angle to each other.
Draw the outer boards on a blueprint. On these later, the seating boards are screwed with a little overhang. If these are, for example, thirty centimeters wide and should later survive five centimeters on both sides, the following calculation results:
Outer frame minus twenty centimeters = inner frame.
Dig up the pit
Sandboxes should have a minimum depth of 15 centimeters. Since children like to dig, it may be a few inches more. Bear in mind that even a layer of gravel is filled in and dig sufficiently deep.
Afterwards, a layer of gravel at least two centimeters thick is filled into the hole as a drainage. This prevents the water from damaging under the sandbox.
Assemble sandbox
Position the structure exactly at the edge of the scooped out pit. Now fix a sheet of weed foil on one of the inner sides and guide it along the ground to the other side. The foil serves as a weed barrier and ensures that no uninvited guests settle out of the underground in the sandbox.
Fill the sandbox
Now we are almost done and it goes to the filling of the self-built sandbox. Use special play sand for this, which you will receive as bagged goods or loose in the trade. It is characterized by the following properties:

Unlike sandboxes that have been purchased, and where the fill quantity is often specified, you will need to calculate the sand requirements for the sandbox that we have built according to our instructions. If the Buddelkiste has an internal dimension of 120 centimeters by 120 centimeters and a depth of 30 centimeters, the following calculation results:
120 cm x 120 cm x 30 cm = 432 000 cm³ which corresponds to the equivalent of 0.432 m³.
Game sand is offered either in small bags, a cheap big pack with a cubic meter capacity (1000 liters) or open.
Tips
So that animals do not pollute the sand with their feces, you can build a cover for the sandbox. Very practical is a frame, which is covered with a close-meshed net. This will not create a locked room under the cover, in which woodlice and other insects would feel comfortable.Neighbor's cat is still effectively kept away. In addition, the penetrating sunlight has a germicidal effect. And while you're at it, you may also feel like building a children's swing yourself.
