The large family of passion flower plants is mainly native to Central and South America, with some species also found in Australia. The climbers are mainly cultivated in gardens, on balconies or as indoor plants because of their large, colorful and exotic-looking flowers.

As numerous as the different species of Passiflora are, so different are they in home, habitus and growing conditions. In addition to numerous blue and white blooming species exude in particular the pink and red flower colors a very special fascination. None of the red flowering passion flowers is hardy.

These passion flowers differ greatly in terms of their care. While Passiflora murucuja reliably shows its small flowers even without too much care, other species develop their enchanting flowers only under glass and with much effort. The flowers of the P. alata, which is also known as the winged passion flower, are particularly demanding but also wonderful to look at. As a rule of thumb, the deeper and darker the red of the flower, the more demanding the Passiflora is in terms of its care.

The Passiflora quadrangularis (Giant Grenadilla) flowers with red petals and purple-white radiate ring very colorful. The up to 30 centimeters long fruits are edible.
