Radish - one garden year, two harvests

Radish is like no other vegetables particularly well suited for the healthy and hearty raw food enjoyment. From sowing to harvest, it takes less than ten weeks and the care required is minimal.

Summer and winter radish

One distinguishes between summer and winter radish. The former is harvested about 8 to 10 weeks after sowing. It is not suitable for storage, but is intended for immediate consumption. Depending on the sowing time, the summer radish is ready for harvest in late May-early June. When the harvest is complete, you can lay out the seeds of winter radish.

Winter radish needs a bit longer to mature than summer radish. Between 13 and 15 weeks pass since sowing, before the winter radish varieties can be brought out of the soil in October. In any case, the harvest should be finished before the first frosts.

Just pull the tubers out of the ground and remove the foliage. When properly stored in boxes of wet sand in a cool and dry place, the winter radish will keep nicely crisp over the winter. As with any other vegetables, you should occasionally check the tubers for rot and immediately sort out the affected specimens.


Do not miss the right time to harvest

For both types of radish, it is advisable not to exceed the right time for harvesting. If the ripe summer radish is not harvested within two to three weeks, the fruits become furry and inedible. The winter radish loses its aroma and the tubers lignify if left in the soil for too long. In any case, pay attention to the corresponding notes at harvest time on the seed bag.

Radish is low in calories, high in vitamins A, B and C and in minerals. The mustard oils contained in it are also thought to have a stimulating effect on digestion. Radish is enjoyed raw. It is grated, cut into sticks or thin slices and, with its fresh spiciness, complements the summery salad.
