Leek - recognize pests and diseases in good time
Leek is a robust plant that needs little care. However, some diseases and pests are causing problems for the leek. The plants must be well monitored so that possible damage is noticed in time.
Harvesting leeks - How to get the leeks out of the ground.Pests and diseases of the leek
Despite best care, diseases and pests can not always be prevented. Regular checking of leek leaves and sticks after sowing is therefore the best way to prevent the infestation from spreading. The main leek diseases and pests are:
leek rust
Porreerost is the most common disease of the leek. It can be recognized by rust pustules in strong orange, which appear on the leaves. When leeks occur, all that remains is to dispose of all affected plants.
Wrong mildew
A whitish coating on the leaf tops and brown leaf undersides are the signs of downy mildew. It occurs especially in very humid weather.Cut off all affected parts of the plant and treat the remaining leek plants with a manure from field horsetail.
Yellow stripe virus
Yellowish streaks on leek leaves are triggered by the yellow-banded virus. If the virus has occurred, the plant must be disposed of. As a precaution, choose resistant varieties to plant leeks.
Allium moth and leekminer fly
If the leopard and the black spots show signs of leeks, leek moth and leek fly are at work. The pests lay their eggs in leeks. After hatching, the larvae feed on the rods and reduce the leek harvest. Stretch a tight mesh over the bed as soon as the first leeks have risen. This prevents the pests from oviposition.
thrips
White-gray speckled spots on leeks indicate thrips. These pests are very small and usually only recognizable when the plant is beyond saving. Once the stains are visible, try to rinse the plant with lukewarm water. Mostly, however, any help comes too late.
Tips & Tricks
Leeks infected with diseases and pests should never be disposed of on the compost. Otherwise, the pathogens continue to spread. Throw the bars into the dustbin or burn them.
