Pomelo - How to recognize the maturity?

The giant pomelo was first developed in Israel in the 1970s. This new citrus with the very healthy and low-calorie fruits was created from a cross between grapefruit and grapefruit. Mature pomelos taste rather sweet, but the white skins inside are rather bitter and tough. They should therefore be removed.

Pomelo - When ripe?

In the supermarket are usually large (pomelos are often around 500 grams in weight, but can be up to a kilogram heavy) to find fruits with a yellow or yellow-orange, smooth and shiny shell. Even if these pomelos look very tempting - rather choose the one with the rather matte and slightly shriveled shell. Such fruits usually taste much sweeter. Incidentally, so-called "honey pomelos" are mostly from China and taste exactly as they are called: honey sweet. If the pomelo tastes dry, it was already too old.

When are the fruits ripe on my pomelo tree?

Unfortunately, the likelihood of you actually being able to harvest ripe (and edible) fruits from your pomelo tree is low. Pomelos usually bloom between May and June, whereas the fruits do not mature until November and need a lot of warmth and sun for the ripening process. However, as it is naturally dark and cold in winter, we do not have the necessary conditions for ripening fruits. If you really want to harvest citrus fruits, you might prefer lemons, tangerines or kumquats.

How can you eat the pomelo?

As a rule, pomelos are eaten as fruit, but you can peel them like an orange.

Pomelos (which, like all citrus fruits, also belong to the berries) are less juicy than other citrus fruits and are therefore rarely used to make fruit juice. The thick albedo, which is called the white layer between shell and pulp inside the fruit, up to four centimeters thick, is sometimes candied without the outer shell and used as a candy or as an ingredient for food and pastries.
