What is the difference between pomelo and grapefruit?
It is estimated that exact numbers are unknown - there are about 400 different citrus species in the world, of which only a few are known in this country. However, by far the largest part of these citrus plants has emerged from crosses, so that the species are more or less closely related to each other. All citrus species go back to the three ancestral grapefruit, mandarin and lemon lemon.
The emergence of grapefruit
The grapefruit, Latin Citrus paradisi, is a young citrus clan, probably in the 18th Century on the Caribbean island of Barbados as a hybrid of the grapefruit (Citrus maxima) and the orange (Citrus sinensis) emerged. Already the orange is again a cross product of mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and bitter orange (bitter orange, Citrus aurantium), the latter once from grapefruit and mandarin emerged ... The family history of citrus species is complicated and difficult to see through, no wonder it again and again there is confusion. By the way, in the German language the grapefruit is equated with the grapefruit, although it is different kinds.
Grapefruit varieties
There are grapefruit with light and reddish to deep red flesh. The intensity of the color indicates the sweetness of the fruit - the darker the flesh, the sweeter it is. Among the light grapefruit "Duncan" is both the largest and the tastiest - juicy and very aromatic, sufficiently sweet and with many seeds. Therefore, it is slowly being replaced by the almost seedless Marsh grapefruit as fresh fruit and grown mainly for juice extraction. The red-fleshed Star Ruby grapefruit is a very attractive container plant, although the New Zealand grapefruit is much better suited for cultivation in our latitudes. This mild aromatic variety needs less heat than other grapefruit.
The pomelo
The term "pomelo" is usually understood to mean two different varieties of pomelo. On the one hand, "Pomelo" is the English name for the genuine grapefruit, which is originally native to Southeast Asia. It is cultivated mainly in Thailand, Malaysia, southern China (here called Honey Pomelo) and Indonesia. The other species is associated with the grapefruit, but is a crossbred product of grapefruit and grapefruit. This pomelo is sweeter than a grapefruit.
The Hirado Buntan Pomelo
This pomelo species is not a crossbreed, but a genuine grapefruit and is one of the most popular species. It is a very vigorous grapefruit with very large, dark green leaves. Its flowers appear in large ears with up to 20 single flowers. The variety is more resistant to cold temperatures than most other grapefruit. The sweet aromatic fruit ripens very early, already in December. In addition, the plant is very vigorous, forms a broad bush and therefore represents an impressive container plant.

Numerous varieties have emerged from the cross between tangerine and grapefruit or mandarin and pomelo. All have very aromatic fruits, which are to be classified in terms of taste between the parents.
