The peach, also known as "Persian apple", has been cultivated in Germany for many centuries. Even the famous abbess and healer Hildegard von Bingen already knew the fruit. So surprising that the sweet and aromatic peach is not found more frequently in German gardens.
Peaches are demanding
Apples, cherries, pears - these types of fruit can be found in almost all gardens, but peaches are a rarity. This may be partly because many people do not even know that the sweet fruit thrives here - but also because peaches are quite demanding in terms of care. In addition to the optimal location, a peach needs a lot of attention, must be fertilized, poured, cut and protected against diseases and pest infestation.

Basically, the peach is a sun hungry and heat loving tree. However, many new varieties as well as some old varieties are bred for robustness and resistance to cold so that cultivation outside the southern wine regions can be worthwhile. Peaches have to be pruned every year
The peach bears almost exclusively on annual shoots, which is why the tree must be cut vigorously and professionally every year after harvesting. Otherwise, the tree sheds quickly and a strong crop decline is the result. In addition, young peaches are growing very fast. Depending on the variety, the tree can grow between one and eight meters high, with most varieties reaching a height of three to four meters.
Peaches are prone to fungal diseases
In particular, fungal diseases such as the dreaded cramp disease infest peach trees and reduce yields. Preventive measures such as the spraying of fungicides in spring usually help against these and other infections. Due to the high risk of infection you should plant especially less sensitive varieties. Although these are not immune to the cramping disease and Co., but usually develop significantly fewer symptoms and are therefore less restricted.
Tips & Tricks
Many hobby gardeners swear to ward off the Kräuselkrankheit on mothballs, which are simply hung in the spring - even before the Blattaustrieb - in the tree. However, these only work if they contain the active ingredient naphthalene.
