Cultivate a peach tree in Germany successfully

The peach tree, in Latin "Prunus perica", originally comes from southern China and is therefore used to warmth and sunshine. However, some of our peaches have also been cultivated here for centuries, so that these varieties are used to the German climate. Also many new breeds are very robust.

It depends on the situation

In the wine-growing regions, especially on the Lower Moselle, it has been a tradition since the 16th century to grow the so-called vineyard peaches. But other peach varieties thrive for a long time in the German regions. These include, for example, the foothill peach (also Roter Ellerstädter or Kernechter vom Vorgebirge) or the now quite rare variety Anneliese Rudolph. But also for these peaches: The situation is important.

The right location for a peach

Basically, you can also keep peaches in a bucket, which is recommended because of their sensitivity, especially in young trees. However, these trees (often shrubs) are very high and also grow very fast, which is why planting in the garden eventually becomes necessary. A peach feels so good at such a place:

Ensure the quality of the soil

Peaches also need a loose, humus-rich soil. Heavy, loamy and wet soils are not suitable. If your soil does not have the required quality, you can also excavate a larger hole and fill it with a correspondingly mixed substrate. Another option is to graft a peach on a plum base. Since peaches have a high nutrient requirement, they must be fertilized regularly - especially nitrogen is important, but not too much. An excess can weaken the tree and cause illness.

Is the peach tree hardy?

This question can not be answered so flatly, since the frost sensitivity varies from species to variety. However, older peach trees in particular are quite insensitive and can be wrapped in very cold temperatures with fleece or burlap and thus protected. Suitable varieties for cultivation in German climate are:

Some varieties also tolerate a harsher climate outside the winegrowing regions, but by no means all. In particular, the white peaches are quite robust.

Tips & Tricks

Try a dwarf peach like z. B. Bonanza in a pot to cultivate. This fits easily on the balcony and terrace.
