The sight of palm trees makes many dream of southern countries. Little is known that among the more than 2,000 species there are some that are frost resistant. You can also plant them out in our garden.
Which palms are allowed in the field?
When buying, make sure that the palm is hardy and tolerates higher temperatures. This is usually noted on the plant label.
Which location is suitable?
Even frost-resistant palms should not be used indiscriminately anywhere. Give the plant as sunny a spot as possible, for example, in front of the additionally protecting, south-facing house wall.
The course should also be sheltered from the wind. Constant draft does not catch the pinnate leaves and they would look shredded after a short time.
For the same reason, you should not put the plant too close to a path. Well-groomed palms can become very large over the years. As you pass by, push the leaves over and over, fold them, dry them, and repel them. This can severely affect the appearance.
Plant the palm in the garden
Palm trees form little branched roots, but they reach far into the depths. Therefore, do the following when inserting:
In regions where severe frosts are imminent, it is recommended to dig out the planting hole a little larger and to provide it with upstanding, insulating foam boards. The soil below the root ball remains free, so that the root that goes in depth can develop.
In winter, cover the soil around the palm thick with bark mulch, straw or brushwood. Palm trees usually freeze to the ground, through the insulating layer and the plates, the soil heat is maintained and frost damage prevented. An additionally laid, special plant heating cable is recommended, if the palm stands in regions, in which the temperature drops also strongly over several weeks.
Tips
If there is no space in your garden to cultivate the palm tree in the field all year round, then you can place the plant in a pot in a suitable location, in the autumn, in the house to overwinter in the apartment.
