Planting magnolia - be careful when selecting plants
The tree disk below the magnolia can sometimes appear quite bare, especially outside the flowering period. In addition, if you do not want to weed all the time, it's a good idea to have a planting under the ground. But beware: The Magnolia is a solitary and tolerates no competition.
Do not compete
The roots of older magnolia in particular grow over a wide area and close to the ground. The shallow root Magnolia is also very sensitive to too dry and / or too nutrient-poor soils. For this reason, you must not put any plants under your magnolia, which form even deep roots and / or your tree not only the space, but also dispute water and nutrients. You should also keep in mind that under a magnolia it is usually very shady, plus a thick carpet of discarded leaves in autumn or flowers that bloom in spring. An underplanting makes sense if it keeps the soil constantly moist and cool - that's what magnolias like.
Suitable plant species for a subplantation
For the underplanting of magnolias, you should not choose woody plants, but spring blooms, summer flowers and low shrubs that do not root deep nor draw too much water. The plants must also be able to thrive well in the shade. Even lawns can be planted, but a large area around the trunk should be left free and possibly mulched. The following list shows some suitable species for underplanting the magnolia.
Magnolia only mulching
Basically, planting in the magnolia case is only the second best choice, as the plants will always compete with your tree and it can be very bad for you. You should also avoid digging or hacking in the root area of the magnolia. Instead, you can simply cover the tree disc generously with bark mulch that does not let weeds through or allow it to dry out or overheat the soil.
Tips & Tricks
If you want to dare to plant a subplant, pour a layer of compost or potting soil about 20 centimeters thick, leaving about 30 centimeters free around the trunk. Now put the desired planting on this layer.
