Better not share lavender
Especially the tall lavender varieties quickly overgrow the space granted to them and spread out in the garden. Many a desperate gardener comes up with the idea to share the lavender which has become too big. But beware: Especially with older, woody plants, the splitting can cause great damage and lead to the death of the lavender.
Cut lavender better instead of dividing
Lavender is not one of the perennials - which are divisible - but the shrubs. The plant melts with increasing age and does not usually drive out of this old wood - for this reason you should never cut back lavender too far. A lavender several years old, too large should be better drastically shortened. You can prune the plant by half, but if possible cut away only soft shoots. With a neat, round shape cut you also reduce the plant in width.
Too much lavender share
If pruning is of no use or lavender is too bulky, you can still try to divide. However, you should proceed with caution and, above all, if possible, do not damage any roots, otherwise the plant will be absorbed. However, this measure is usually no longer possible with heavily lignified lavender plants. For the division, proceed as follows:
Better not share lavender for propagation
If you just want to multiply your lavender, a division is too risky and therefore unsuitable. For propagation cuttings or sinkers are much better, with some lavender species such as the sterile lavender can actually be multiplied only by these methods. The right time for the cuttings propagation is the spring (there should be no more frosts) as well as the early summer.
Tips & Tricks
Not all types of lavender can be multiplied by seeds. Only the true lavender often sows itself and grows wild in this way.
