Sow cress in the field

In its own garden, cress can be sown almost everywhere. In a favorable location in a sunny location, the plant thrives particularly well. But even in a shady spot cress grows. It only takes a little longer until the herb is ready for harvest.

You can also easily plant cress as a catch crop or keep it mixed with other plants. Cress does not go so well with rucola salad.

Cress has no special requirements on the ground. It also thrives on lean and leached soils. You just have to make sure that the seed does not dry out and the plants are evenly moist later.

Prepare the soil for sowing

If you have space for your own curb bed in the garden, loosen the earth and place rows at a distance of 15 centimeters.

If you sow watercress, you should bring the seeds very thinly, because the plants need a bit more space than garden cress. Because the seed is very fine, mix it with some fine sand if necessary.

You can also sprinkle the cress seeds easily breitwürfig. This will give you a bed covered with a thick green carpet.

The best time to sow cress

Cress can be sowed outdoors from mid-May. The plants are sensitive to frost and need a soil temperature of at least 15 degrees to germinate.

Cress is a light germ

Cress is not covered with soil after sowing. It is one of the light germs and needs the direct light to reduce the germ inhibition of the seed.

However, heavy rains can be a problem because they wash away the seeds. Therefore, squeeze the seeds slightly and spray them with water from the spray bottle after sowing.

If you do not have a garden, that's no problem for watering cress. The undemanding herb also thrives on the windowsill wonderful.

As a planter, you can take everything that the household gives, from soup plates over a glass of water to the egg carton. The watercress is also very good in clay pots.

Cress can be sowed on almost any substrate. It sprouts in normal garden soil just as well as on a folded piece of kitchen paper, a cotton ball or a tempo handkerchief.

How to sow cress properly

Thoroughly clean the provided plant pots so that no mold spores or bacteria stick to them. If you sow the cress in soil, you should put it in the hot oven for a few minutes to kill any germs.

Fill the planters with soil, crepe or cotton wool and let the material soak in water. Excess water pour off.

Sprinkle the cress as evenly as possible on the plant substrate and lightly press it. Keep the seeds evenly moist until sprouted, but make sure that no waterlogging occurs, as the cress then molds. Use a spray bottle to moisten, as a too-hard jet of water sweeps the small seeds away.

Keep the seed moist

During the germination period, the seed must be kept as constant as possible moist. Pour gently and drain off excess water.

Set the cress bed as bright and warm as possible. Avoid too much sunshine behind the glass, as the seeds can then dry out and burn the cotyledons.

The first roots develop on the first and second day. Cress sprouts are ready for harvest after four days.

Sow cress on the window sill all year round

On the windowsill you can sow new cress all year round. Make sure you have enough light to keep the plants strong and not too high.
