The herb garden on the windowsill

Even those who do not have a garden do not have to do without fresh herbs. Almost all herbs grow easily in pots, pots and even in the flower box. For some species, this cultivated form is even preferable to planting in the bed. For example, basil often develops more abundantly in the pot than in the garden, where bad weather or snails put a heavy strain on it.

The right location

The culture at the kitchen window is unbeatably practical. So you have the pase seasoning always fresh and in top quality at hand. However, the prerequisite is that the window offers bright, sunny lighting conditions. Because especially in the house, where the light intensity is lower anyway, herbs need plenty of sun for an intense aroma. The windows facing east or west are ideal, whereas the plants in front of south-facing windows can quickly get hot, especially in the hot summer months. During this time, however, you can move the herbs away from the window or, if available, on the balcony or terrace in the fresh air.

Suitable herbs for the windowsill

In general, the one- and two-year-old herb species are particularly suitable for keeping in containers: Dill, cress, parsley, chervil, annual savory or chives are often more effective in the pot than in the soil. Also some exotics are well suited for the room culture. Lemongrass, ginger, turmeric or cilantro flourish in our room without any problems.

Check herbs in room culture for pests

All herbs and aromatic plants grown in the house should be regularly examined for pest infestation. Especially in winter, when dry heating air causes the plants, spider mites and aphids spread quickly.

To put herbs on the windowsill

Many herbs are preferred to be on the windowsill at the end of winter or early spring. You can sow the seeds in the boxes or pots in which the plants are to grow later. Do not sprinkle the seeds too close; only cress and chervil like to stand a little closer. Instead, you can also use seed trays or indoor greenhouses to grow, but then seedlings must pique after emergence (i.e., place individually in larger and deeper vessels).

Tips

In the room culture, it is particularly important to cover the seed containers with a plastic bag or cap, so that the seedlings get the necessary humidity. Only when the leaves sprout, is aired now and then.
