The different kinds of the domestic Knabenkrautes
In central Europe there are only a few native orchid species. One of the more common and suitable for the garden species are the popularly called orchid. They are also available in several species.
Different genera belong to the Knabenkräutern
Orchis is the generic name for a number of domestic orchids. In addition to the genera Dactylorhiza (about 40 species) and Orchis also includes some monotypic species such as Gymnadenia.

Not all orchid species have the same demands on location, soil quality and care. To be on the safe side, you should be aware of the conditions that the orchid species you have planted prefers.
Pull orchid in the garden
All orchid species are hardy and are grown perennial. Most species prefer a sunny location. Suitable places for planting orchids are peat bogs, flowering meadows and flowerbeds. Orchid in particular feels close to other orchids.
The plant substrate should be nice crumbly. The intermixing of coarse wood chips promotes healthy growth. When cultivating shrubby herbs, make sure that the bed is always kept slightly moist.
Dactylorhizae invade in the fall and form daughter tubers, where a winter bud appears. Some of the Orchis species, however, already in the summer. A rosette grows at the planting site, from which a new orchid is cast out the following spring.
Orchid is under protection
In Germany, orchid herb has become very rare in the wild and is therefore protected. Digging and picking is prohibited.
For planting in the garden, the gardener can resort to plants from the nursery. These are propagated in the laboratory.
Most native orchids are not suitable for keeping in the garden. An exception is the orchid, which also develops well in the field.
Tips
The flowering times of the various orchid species fall on different times. Some species begin to flower in May, while others do not show their first flowers before the end of June. The flowering period lasts depending on the species until July or August.
