Yucca gloriosa - the candle palm
The Yucca gloriosa or candle palm is also often referred to as outdoor yucca. It is a woody plant that forms a trunk with age and can grow up to 2.50 m tall.
The leaves of the evergreen candle palmlilie are gray-green to blue-green colored and sword-shaped. The edges of the leaves can be quite sharp, so you should cut off the withered leaves and not tear. A young candles palmlilie does not bloom and still has no trunk. This only develops over the years and then branches out more and more.
Very decorative garden plant
If your candle palm is a few years old, then it will bloom too. Their flowers exude a pleasant scent. The inflorescences are up to 1.40 m long and resemble oversized lilies of the valley, a thoroughly impressive image.
The candle Palmlilie does not need a lot of water and should rather be poured sparingly. Waterlogging tolerates them just as little as too much rain. Therefore, a location near the house or on a wall is recommended. Note, however, that the Palmlilie can reach a quite considerable size, with the appropriate scope. For a very rainy area the candle palm is not very suitable.
The candle palm-tree in winter
Despite its origin from the rather dry southeast of the US or Mexico, the candle palm is hardy. Frost tolerates them to about - 20 ° C quite well. However, it should be as dry as possible, especially in winter. In case of prolonged frost or in a particularly cold area you should protect the roots of the candles from the cold. Recommended is a thick mulch or deciduous layer.
