Does the nasturtium tolerate frost?
The nasturtium is not hardy and does not tolerate frost. Already during the first night frosts freeze above the aboveground parts of the plant. If you want to overwinter your nasturtium you should be active before.
However, you should first make sure that your nasturtium is actually a perennial variety. There are now many new varieties with many color options. Unfortunately, most of them are one year old.
Properly overwinter nasturtium
Cut back your nasturtium from the flowerbed in autumn and plant the tuber in a large pot. Place this in a bright and frost-free place, for example in the conservatory. How far you cut back the Nasturtium depends, among other things, on the available space.
If you have your nasturtium already in tubs or boxes on the balcony or terrace, transplanting is not necessary. Cut only withered flowers and leaves and put the plants in their winter place. You can limit the watering during the winter months. Make sure, however, that the soil does not get too dry.

Alternative to wintering
If you have no room to overwinter your nasturtium, but would like to plant the same varieties next year, then there is also an alternative.Cut cuttings out of your old plant or take seeds that you sow in spring.
The cuttings initially need less space and a smaller pot, but are genetically identical to the original plant. In the spring, they can be planted directly after the ice saint and you will not have to wait too long for the usual flowers.
If you have decided to collect the seeds, you should dry them carefully so that they do not mold. Already in March, you can start sowing on the windowsill or in the heated greenhouse.
