The cultivation of nasturtium
In old cottage gardens is mainly the large nasturtium with its bright yellow to orange flowers. The varieties with white, pink or even black flowers, however, are largely unknown, while they are no less decorative than their known relatives.
The cultivation and care of nasturtium is not difficult and should also be easy for gardeners. Even if you choose a lushly rambling variety, you should not or only sparingly fertilize your nasturtium, if you want to enjoy a rich blooms.
Sow nasturtium
Nasturtium can be sowed outdoors in the middle of May. Since it is not frost hardy, you should wait until the ice saints are over. The relatively large seeds can easily be stuck individually or in pairs in the ground. The distance between the plants should be about 20 to 30 cm.
Cover the seeds with about one to two centimeters of soil, because the Kapuznierkresse is one of the dark germs. Keep the seeds always well moist, then after about 10 - 20 days the first seedlings can be seen.
If you want to see the nasturtium blossom very early in your garden, you should prefer it in March on the windowsill or in the greenhouse. Always put two to three seeds in a pot, cover them with soil and keep the seeds always well wet.
Plant nasturtium
By planting your nasturtium you should definitely wait until after the icy saints around mid-May. Otherwise, the tender shoots could fall prey to the last night frosts. The planting distance varies considerably depending on the selected variety. Bushy varieties can be planted next to each other in color, long-ranged may well grow confused or use a common trellis aid.
