Cacti are not poisonous, but caution is advised
Since the great majority of cactus species thrive as succulents, the plants have created large amounts of water in their leaves and shoots. Thus, it is predominantly cell water that flows from the wounds after a pruning. It contains no toxic substances. In fact, some cacti even produce edible fruits, such as the prickly pears (Opuntia).
A skin injury caused by the sharp thorns, however, should not be taken lightly. As with any other injury, there is an increased risk of infection even with the smallest wound. Therefore, also clean small scratches carefully and disinfect them with iodine ointment. As a precaution, we recommend that you always approach the defensive plants with gloves that are resistant to thorns during all work involving plants and care.
