The imperial crown in the field: hardy or not?
Due to the exotic-looking flowers many gardeners are often tempted to overwinter the imperial crown in a pot or as an excavated onion in the basement. This may be precisely the reason for the lack of flowering of the resistant plants.
Disadvantages of hibernation in the house
Basically, the onions of the imperial crown can indeed survive a hibernation in the basement and expel again in the garden when planted again. However, the constant digging disturbs the developmental rhythm of the plants, because they can react even with a frequent implementation in the field with a failure of the magnificent flowers at the flowering time in the spring. Conditions for hibernation in the field
Wintering directly in the outdoor bed is usually not a problem even in severe winters when the bulbs have been planted in the soil at the right depth.The ideal planting depth should amount to about two to three times the onion height of the onions of the imperial crown. So the plants can still gain energy through the leaves and store them in the onions for the next year.

For newly planted imperial crowns, it is recommended to plant the onions in the soil by August at the latest, so that they can root well before the winter. For older Kaiserkronenbeständen you should leave over the winter about 10 centimeters long part of the stem. This then serves you when working in the bed for spatial orientation with respect to the imperial crowns.
