Light frost does not affect the Japanese Maple
Japanese maple usually easy to overwinter
The Japanese maple is not the same as Japanese maple, after all, there are different, very similar, species that are grouped under this term. In addition to the Japanese Maple (Acer japonicum), especially Japanese Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) and the rarer Gold Maple (Acer shirasawanum) belong to this group. But no matter which Japanese maple you choose, almost all species and varieties can be hibernated well.
Japanese maple comes from a similar climate
This is especially true for Japanese maples of the group Acer japonicum, which originate from the rather harsh climate of the Japanese islands Hokkaido and Honshu. Especially on Hokkaido the summers are rather short and mild, while the winters are long and cold. Especially in the months of December to February, temperatures can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius and lower.
Tips
Nevertheless, young Japanese maples and specimens cultivated in pots should be provided with a (light) winter protection. This can consist of a covering mainly of the root area with foliage / brushwood (in particular spruce), jute or raffia.
