The Japanese azalea is a hybrid of various rhododendron species that originated several centuries ago in Southeast Asia. This flower shrub is characterized by a particularly lush flowering, with the colors pink, red, purple and white predominate. In terms of planting and maintenance conditions, Japanese azalea is very similar to the closely related rhododendron.

The plant prefers a light to partially shaded location, preferably in the shade of tall trees. Full sun should be avoided.

Like the rhododendron, the Japanese azalea is a bog plant. It prefers an acidic, humus and thus nutrient-rich soil. Ideal are pH values between 4 and 5.5.
