Raised beds have many advantages

Raised beds have a number of practical advantages over conventional beds:

The pase raised bed for every purpose

In principle, there is the pase raised bed for every garden and for every purpose. The palette ranges from simple wooden boxes to brick-built stone raised beds for ornamental plants as a visual highlight in the garden to the smart table raised bed for kitchen herbs. The material you choose finally depending on your wallet and personal taste.

Which materials are suitable for the construction of a raised bed?

Raised beds made of boards, logs or even old Euro pallets can be built quite simply and inexpensively. Constructions made of prefabricated plastic elements are even faster and easier to build. More elaborate and cost-intensive, but also much more durable, is on the other hand stone. Also metal, gabions or wickerwork is ideal for raised beds.

Spring or autumn? When is the best time to build a raised bed?

A raised bed can be used both in early spring and in autumn, when the foliage is discolored and the asters are blooming. Both times have their advantages. In the spring, for example, there is a lot of half-rotted compost from the pruning of hedges and shrubs as well as from the harvest residues and garden waste of the past year. Even the clippings of fruit trees, which are cut in late winter, can be used well. Finally, you can start sowing or planting as soon as the raised bed is ready. However, if you did not have the option of raised beds in the spring, you can build this just as well in the fall. At this time, there is also no shortage of plant remains and organic material that can migrate to the raised bed instead of the compost.

Brand Eigenbau: Simple raised bed made of laminated wood panels

In every hardware store, you can buy cheap glulam boards in all imaginable sizes, which are actually intended for the construction of shelves or as craft wood. With these large boards you can build a simple raised bed within a maximum of half an hour to an hour, and you can vary its size by the length and width of the boards as desired. Such a raised bed can not only be built in a classical rectangular way, but also in L or U form, for example.

You need these materials and tools

To build this simple raised bed, you'll need a screwdriver or, better yet, a cordless screwdriver and at least 32 Spax screws (40 millimeters) as well as a large stapler with staples and a meter gauge. Spax screws have the advantage of having self-tapping threads, saving you from pre-drilling the holes. In addition, it is best to work with gloves to avoid injury. At the hardware store you get these materials:

Depending on your needs, you can of course also get the material in other dimensions and build the raised bed larger or smaller.

This is how the laminated wood raised bed is built

First, the raised bed is built on a solid and even surface, for example, on the terrace. Take two scantlings of the same size, whichever size you choose, and screw the first glued-wood board flush with the top edge onto the squared timber. Screw the second board firmly so that the first side panel is finished. Now place another board at a right angle and screw it tight. Now you attach the second board, then on the opposite side the first and so on, until you have created a box. Then the wire mesh with the stapler is attached to the bottom board side on the inside. The wire mesh prevents mice, rats or other vermin from nesting in the raised bed. Now pit a 10 to 15 centimeter deep, level pit at the desired location and position the raised bed there. Finally, the inside is lined with pond liner, so that the moisture causes a rot.

Tips

The outer sides of the raised bed can also be coated with an environmentally friendly glaze or wood protection paint to protect against rot and fungal attack.
