How to properly plant your raspberry bushes!
Pulling raspberries in your own garden is not expensive. At the right location and on good soil, the delicious fruits thrive wonderfully and bring rich harvest. What you should consider when planting!
The most important points for planting raspberries:
The right location choice
All raspberry varieties, whether summer raspberries or autumn raspberries, prefer a light, sunny, slightly sheltered location.
The soil must be deeply loosened. The earth must not show any thickening. Rainwater must be able to drain well, so that no waterlogging arises.
If the soil is very calcareous, you should work under a lot of rotted manure or compost.
The best planting time
If you plant raspberries in the fall, you will reap some fruits next year.
You can also plant the shrubs in the spring. The harvest is then completely out of summer raspberries, with autumn raspberries ripen very few fruits.
Prepare soil
The soil is well loosened with a digger fork, weed-free and mixed with mature compost.
Lift a planting hole that is slightly larger than the root ball. The hole should be so deep that the roots are covered about five centimeters from the ground.
If you want to prevent the raspberries from spreading too much in the garden, apply a root barrier around the planting site or rows.
Keep planting distance
Between the bushes a distance of about 50 centimeters and between the rows of at least 1.50 meters should be maintained.
Set the scaffolding and mulch the ground
Especially summer raspberries but also some tall autumn raspberry varieties need a scaffold that supports the rods.
Depending on the variety, place a V-frame or knot framework as soon as you have planted the raspberries.
The soil under the raspberries must be kept free of weeds. Sprinkle a layer of bark mulch or hay around the shrubs.
Tips & Tricks
When planting raspberries, you should make sure that you leave enough space between the rows. This will prevent the soil around the roots from compacting when harvested or weeded. A loose soil is the best prevention against rootstock diseases.
