Houseleek needs little earth
The group of the Hauswurzen (Sempervivum) comes from the family of the thick-leafed plants (Crassulaceae) and occurs in a very large variety of forms, colors and varieties. The extremely frugal plants are originally from the mountains such as the Alps, the Caucasus and the Balkans. As mountain plants, the outdoor succulents are more than satisfied with respect to the substrate with a little lean soil.
Earth should be as lean as possible
Like so many mountain plants, the house sausages are quickly overwhelmed by nutritious soil. The plants need as thin, very well-drained soil as possible. If you want to cultivate Semperviven in the rock garden or in different planters, you should either mix lean soil yourself or use commercially available cactus or succulent soil. To mix the substrate, take commercially available potted soil and mix it with about one third sand or expanded clay. Otherwise, almost all house-shrubs thrive in both acidic and calcareous soils.
Tips
The water drainage is especially important for house shrimp cultivated in pots - the plants need dryness and do not tolerate moisture (especially waterlogging) at all. Good drainage is therefore essential.
