The hemp palm comes from China, where it can be very cold in winter. This palm species is therefore hardy and can be grown outdoors all year round. But some winter protection is still useful. Container plants tolerate less frost and must be wintered protected.

The longer a hemp palm grows in the garden, the more robust it is. Temperatures down to -18 degrees are no problem. The leaves may show frost damage without the palm suffering.
More than cold, the hemp palm in the garden is causing the moisture in winter. Therefore, you should winterize hemp palms by covering the plants with garden fleece or burlap and lay around the palm of a thick mulch layer of leaves, brushwood and fir branches.
Hand-hibernate in the bucket over the winter
In the tub, the hemp palm tolerates temperatures down to -6 degrees. If it does not get colder, you can overwinter the palm tree on the terrace.
At lower temperatures, however, you should bring the hemp palm into the house. Find a place that is bright and not too warm. It should not be warmer than about ten degrees at the winter location. Avoid strong temperature changes. Directly out of the cold into the warm room the hemp palm would not get well.
Hemp palms, which you pull as a houseplant, make you cooler over winter and pour less. The location must be very bright.
Tips
Young hemp palm trees are not hardy yet. They may only be planted outside in the garden when they are at least three or four years old. In the first year they need a particularly good winter protection.
