The ginkgo tree is generally considered to be easy to care for and robust. So is practically not at all susceptible to the usual plant diseases or a possible pest infestation. Due to its size, however, it needs a lot of space in the garden, but is an attractive eye-catcher.
Find the right location
If you want to plant a ginkgo in your garden, it is best to give it enough space when planting; it does not like to later transplant it. In addition, this work becomes more and more difficult with increasing size of the tree.
A ginkgo thrives particularly well in the sun or in the light shade. Ideal is a location where your ginkgo is initially slightly shadowed, but later, as it grows larger, grows into the light, so to speak. The soil should be well drained (sandy to slightly loamy) and moderately moist or moderately dry.
The proper care of a ginkgo tree
The ginkgo does not need a particularly demanding care, just enough water and fertilizer. In the first years, the ginkgo is still slightly sensitive to the blazing sun, but also against frost. Therefore, it makes sense to plant the young plants in the garden only in the second year and to cultivate previously in a pot or bucket.
May my ginkgo overwinter in the garden?
A young plant should ideally overwinter frost-free, as it is still quite sensitive. Later, however, the ginkgo is very hardy and can survive temperatures up to - 28 ° C without major problems. Only the young shoots occasionally suffer a slight frost damage.
