Not all varieties of gardenia are hardy. Most gardenias such as Gardenia jasminoides tolerate no frost at all and must be wintered in the house. But even winter hardy species need sufficient winter protection if they are grown in the garden all year round.
The right location for gardenia in the garden
In the garden, the Gardenia needs a sheltered location, where it is as bright as possible, but not necessarily directly sunny. It is also important that the place is protected from drafts.

Gardenias are very sensitive to lime, both in irrigation water and in the soil. Make sure that the earth is as lime-free as possible. Keep a sufficient distance from walls that could release lime to the ground.

Gardenias do not like it too wet or too dry. Waterlogging is essential to avoid. Water the gardenia regularly during the summer months. Use lime-free water, rainwater is best.
If you have prepared the planting well well and improved the soil with enough mature compost, you do not need to fertilize for a few weeks after planting.
Later, you should regularly provide the Gardenia with rhododendron fertilizer during the growth phase.

Even if the Gardenia has been touted as hardy - do not rely on it. Frost hardy gardenia varieties survive slight frosts in the garden, but only if the frosty periods do not last too long.
For this reason, you should protect the gardenia from frost in autumn by applying a mulch cover and covering the plant with a garden fleece.
Gardenia jasminoides in the garden in summer
Gardenia jasminoides can not be kept in the garden all year round. This variety does not tolerate temperatures below 12 degrees.
You are welcome to put the Gardenia jasminoides outside in the tub in summer. From September you should then overwinter in the house.
Tips
Gardenias are relatively easy to multiply via head cuttings. The cuttings are cut in spring and grown in pots with lime-free substrate. Then they have to be set up bright and warm.
