Looking for a fast-awake hedge? Lilac as a blooming screen
Lilac is at home in many gardens - often as a solitaire or as part of a perennial flowerbed. However, the fast-growing shrub is also wonderful for a hedge plantation - and grows so dense that it reliably shields prying eyes on the property.
Why lilac is wonderful as a screen hedge suitable
Depending on the species and variety, the shrub can grow up to four meters high and form a dense, visually impenetrable leaves dress. In addition, from the beginning of May lilacs bloom beautifully in a variety of violet or pink shades as well as in white - but if you combine lilacs of different colors, you will already achieve a fantastic visual effect during flowering.
Planting and care of a lilac hedge
Furthermore, lilac is considered to be undemanding and easy to care for, properties that only confirm the suitability for hedge planting. But beware: the shrub has not been classified as invasive for no reason, because it proliferates heavily over root shoots, which can even be seen many meters away. Inquire about varieties that have largely discarded this propagation method: Experience has shown that many precious lilacs are included.
Location
The desired lilac hedge needs a sunny and warm location, which, however, does not need to be protected. In contrast to many other woody plants, lilac tolerates drafts and wind very well and is therefore not only great as a visual screen, but also for the windscreen. However, a sunny location is an absolute must, because even in the sparse semi-shade, the impressive lilac blooms decline significantly.

As a solitaire, the lilac needs a fairly large planting distance, but not if you want to plant it as a hedge. In this case, you set up to four plants per meter, then the later hedge is beautiful dense. At regular intervals dig out sufficiently large planting holes, where you can enrich the excavation with compost and horn shavings - this gives the young lilacs the right starting signal to grow. Do not forget to water the freshly planted lilac.

The easy-care lilac copes well with drought and must be watered as a planted hedge only in case of prolonged drought and then when it is still very young and freshly planted. Older lilacs care for themselves through their roots. Fertilization takes place twice a year with compost and horn shavings: once for budding and once again in early summer.
Tips
Lilac should actually be cut after flowering, but this is forbidden for hedges due to breeding birds. Therefore, cut the plants in the autumn, but note that lilac is absolutely not suitable for a severe hedge trimming.
