Plant the elf mirror

Originally based in South Africa, the Elfenspiegel loves a sunny spot. You also do a great favor to your plant with a sheltered place. The soil does not have to be particularly nutrient-rich. Many hybrids, however, are bred to a rich flowering, these plants are already a bit hungrier than the wild varieties.

Since the elf mirror is not really hardy, you should not plant it until late spring. In the case of seedlings, planting is best left until after the icy saints in May, as they are still quite susceptible to frost. Put some well rotted compost in the planting hole and water the freshly planted elf mirror.

Pour the elf mirror and fertilize

Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the summer and water your elf mirror regularly. But you should absolutely avoid waterlogging, otherwise the root could rot. If you are unsure about the perfect casting time, always water when the top layer of soil has dried.

The Elfenspiegel does not need much fertilizer. In many species it is sufficient to fertilize them once after pruning. Very lush flowering hybrids also tolerate a bit more food. Here you can give about once or twice a month a little liquid fertilizer in the irrigation water.

Cut the elf mirror

A pruning not only ensures a decent look but also a long flowering time or a second flowering. Around July, the first flowering spring of the Elfenspiegel is over. Now is the best time for a complete pruning, because it promotes the formation of new buds.

Alternatively, you can remove the withered flowers regularly. The experienced gardeners call this "cleaning up". Then new buds are constantly forming and there is no pause for blossoming like a radical pruning.
